El Paso Children's Day Care Closing After 50 Years

It’s been tucked away in a south El Paso neighborhood for 50 years. Monday, officials announced that El Paso Children’s Day Care is its doors for good.

“We’ve simply run out of money,” said El Paso Children’s Day Care executive director Mazila Cox.

The center will officially close on Friday.

“We’ve had three minimum wage increases in the last three years, but the state of Texas has not increased the amount paid for subsidies to day care,” Cox told KFOX.

El Paso Children’s Day Care is a nonprofit organization. Cox said donations and grants have slowed down. She said the group is supported by the United Way, Child Care Services and the Department of Agriculture’s Child and Adult food program.

“It’s been a tough year,” Cox told KFOX.

And for some parents, without El Paso Children’s Day Care, it’s about to get tougher.

“I’m sad, so sad because she has 2 ½ years here,” said Bricia Gonzalez, referring to her daughter who attends the center. “It’s so hard too on my children,” Gonzalez said with tears in her eyes.
