A mother and her 12-year-old daughter were caught smuggling marijuana by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Fabens, Texas.

When the two drove up Friday to declare their citizenship to CBP officers a drug-sniffing dog alerted them to the drugs, said CBP officials.

A 29-year-old Juarez woman and her 12-year-old daughter were found carrying bundles of marijuana inside their purses. A total of 4.97 pounds of marijuana was seized.

CBP officers remanded custody of the mother, drugs and vehicle to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for prosecution. The daughter was turned over to a family member.
