Skeletal Remains Found In Las Cruces

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department have yet to identify skeletal remains found in Las Cruces.

The remains were only bones and clothes. Investigators said it was too hard to tell whether the person was male or female or give an approximate age.

The remains were found sometime between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Dona Ana County Sheriff’s investigators said workers from the Elephant Butte Irrigation District were looking for a pipe in a drainage canal along the 3800 block of Picacho Avenue.

According to investigators, as the workers searched for the pipe, they came across a pair of tennis shoes, some clothing and a skull. They then immediately called the sheriff's department.

As detectives investigated, they said they came across more skeletal remains. The sheriff's department has sent the remains to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine more. While investigators said identification was found in the remains, they can't yet confirm whether it's the same individual.

“They ended up finding some identification,” said investigator Richard Chavez. “Until this individual is positively identified...we can't release any of the name.”

Through the preliminary investigation the Sheriff’s department said the individual could possibly be a transient and they don’t believe foul play was involved.
