Man Involved In Northeast SWAT Situation In Custody

EL PASO, Texas -- The man who barricaded himself inside a northeast motel Monday morning surrendered to deputies, officials said.

The standoff happened Monday around 11:55 a.m. after deputies attempted to serve three felony warrants to 34-year-old Gilberto Garcia Jr. at the Beverly Crest Inn located at 8709 Dyer Drive.

Officials told KFOX Garcia was armed with a knife and had barricaded himself with his mother in the room, but the mother later came out.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jesse Tovar said Garcia is a schizophrenic and had not taken his medication for some time.

Authorities negotiated with the man to come out of the locked bathroom and surrender. Deputies said they also had to use a Taser gun on Garcia.
