Drop-Out Rate Concerns New Mexico

Posted: 5:18 pm MDT September 10, 2009

With a very high drop-out rate among high school students the state of New Mexico is trying tackle the problem head on and as quickly as they can.

New Mexico Lt. Governor Diane Denish held a graduation summit Thursday at New Mexico State University.

About 500 people from across the state, school administrators, teachers, and students attended the summit to hear an action plan to fight the state's drop-out problem.

"It's been a big point out to me showing me how everything including social life can make you want to drop out but you shouldn't do it," said Olivia Rainbolt from Las Montanas Charter School.

The New Mexico Public Education Department reports the state has a drop-out rate of 46 percent.
