El Paso's MHMR Intake And Crisis Emergency Department Sets The Mood

Despite recent budget shortfalls limiting out-patient care at El Paso's Mental Health Mental Retardation facility, its Intake Crisis and Emergency Department is fully operational and fully funded.

Two years ago, Texas lawmakers approved money for the state's 39 MHMR facilities. In El Paso, some of that money specifically went to improve the Crisis Emergency Department 's appearance. "The color templates were designed to include more earth tones, which are very soothing and relaxing. We didn't use any harsh red and blues," said MHMR Director Jesus Quiroga.

On average, the MHMR sees 700 borderland residents a month. Its Crisis Emergency Department is an alternative to a hospital emergency room. Often the center is the first place El Pasoans go if they are suicidal or dealing with an emotional breakdown or other emergency psychiatric problems.

Quiroga said the new relaxing atmosphere helps to reduce stress and anxiety for the patients and it seems to be working. Prior to the changes, employees said the facility was stale and uninviting especially to patients with mental problems. But since the improvements, the number of patient restraints at the center are down.

"The children's waiting area was also thought through with no TV to be less stimulating, with simple music playing and toys that are specific to helps kids with ADHD," adds Quiroga.

Designers also took safety into mind. Flower vases, pictures on the wall and other fixtures are bolted down so they can't be used as projectiles or to hurt anyone.

Anyone who might need to speak to a trained professional regarding any crisis situation in their life can call the Crisis Hotline 779-1800, 24 hours a day.
