Park And Ride Bus Kicked Off Today

Tuesday would be the first ever rides of the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Park and Ride bus route. And as it was getting time to go home for some, KFOX decided to join them. KFOX’s first stop was New Mexico State University headed back to El Paso. Rosa Reyes is an NMSU student from the Sun City so she's often on Interstate 10.

"Twice a week," she said.

And after one day of the new park and ride, she said she is already hooked.

“Such a time’s saving for me just studying wise, would save on gas mileage on my car and I didn't have to worry about driving,” said Reyes.

As far as gas mileage, she knew she would be saving, but was curious to know how much exactly. KFOX helped her figure that out and it turned out she will be looking to save about $48 a month by riding the bus.

As Reyes was arriving back home in El Paso, the bus and KFOX would turn around, but first pick Fred Brown who works in El Paso, but lives in Las Cruces.

"I'm here all five days a week every single day of the month," said Brown.

KFOX didn't need to help him calculate what he would be saving on gas, because he already did.

"We figured I spent about $320 a month in gas, a monthly pass for the bus is $90,” said Brown. “So I'm going to save a little over $200 a month in gas, so I told my employees I got myself a raise."

Just like Reyes, not only is it money that he'll be saving, but time as well.

“In fact, this morning I was catching some Zs on the way in. Can't do that when you're driving,” he said.

The one last thing both passengers have in common is their opinion of the quality of bus.

“I was impressed. It's a very nice bus. It's almost like one of those touring buses,” said Brown.

“I expected a city bus so when I got here, this to me was a luxury bus,” said Reyes.
