EL PASO, Texas -- Justices of the Peace in El Paso County have a lot of responsibility as judges of smaller crimes, and they said their job can require a lot of driving. That's why their so upset about their car allowances getting taken away by county commissioners.Judge Bruce King of Precinct 7 in Vinton said what county commissioners have done is unfair."We felt like we were being singled out without having the commissioners court understand completely what our needs are," King told KFOX.King is upset that other elected officials got to keep their allowance."If they eliminate our car allowance based upon what they perceive our needs to be, then they should eliminate everybody's car allowance," he said.County Judge Anthony Cobos defended the court's decision."The JPs go to and from work and on occasion they do visit another court to cover for the other judge, and commissioners court just didn't believe that a $200 a month allocation was appropriate," said Cobos.Cobos said everyone in county government have made sacrifices, and so do the judges."The county government is very concerned about holding the line on taxes, and we're trying to accomplish that without any layoffs, so we're looking at cuts wherever we can," he said. But King believed a double standard is being applied."It just demonstrates their attitude and their lack of understanding of what justice courts do," said King. The judges were also upset that the car allowances were discussed during a different part of the budget hearings then they were expecting. But commissioners responded by saying the decision happened in the open and was very public about it.
