El Pasoans Buy Lottery Tickets For $333 M Jackpot

Not many people think $333 million is small potatoes.

“That’s a lot,” said Daniel Figueroa.

It’s so much that it drove Margaret Natividad and many other El Pasoans to buy a lottery ticket in Friday nights Mega Millions multi-state lottery. The jackpot is $333 million, the second-largest jackpot in history.

“I'd probably catch a heart attack and die before I got it," Natividad told KFOX as she laughed. Natividad bought several tickets for the drawing.

Others are also optimistic that they will win.

“This is the last time you guys are going see me in El Paso, because I'm going to be living in Beverly Hills," said Ashley Bennett after she purchased five lottery tickets.

KFOX reporter Miri Marshall and photojournalist Frank Mangana saw several people leaving the Diamond Shamrock convenience store in west El Paso with several lottery tickets. One man purchased 55 tickets, another man purchased 80 tickets.

The KFOX crew also went to Circle K on Mesa, where a clerk told them some people spent $150 on lottery tickets.

Texas Lottery Commission spokesperson Robyn Smith said the state estimates that Texans will spend a total of $49 million dollars to take a chance in this multi-state lottery. If no one wins tonight's jackpot it will go up to $430 million.

But some they would rather keep their dollar in their pocket.

"I could have a $00 and still not win, so those statistics aren't really good for me," said Figueroa.

Tickets are sold in California, Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Washington.
