El Paso County Sheriff's Department Budget Goes Up For 2010

Despite a call from county commissioners to cut each department's budget the Sheriff's Office budget is going up in 2010.

Sheriff Richard Wiles said that's because of the county's commitment to provide pay raises to deputies and detention officers, as part of their collective bargaining agreement.

Wiles said another major cost to his office has been overtime at the county jail where a certain number of officers are required to be on-duty around the clock.

"We need to look at this and see what's most cost-effective for the county. Whether we continue to pay the overtime or hire new people. And I think the consensus is, it's probably hiring new people," said Wiles.

Wiles said his department is cutting back on expenses where possible and looking at creating more energy efficient facilities.
