El Paso Man Killed In New Mexico Crash

New Mexico state police said the car an El Paso man was sleeping in crashed and ejected and killed him.

Police said the driver, Thomas Vargas, was going east on highway 180 towards Hobbs, N.M. when the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee went into the median. The driver overcorrected and the Jeep rolled over.

Renee Macias Herrera, 18, was ejected and died at the scene. Police said his twin brother Richardo Macias Herrera was not injured.

Police said Herrera was sleeping in the luggage area and was the only passenger not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Driver fatigue was a contributing factor in the crash, according to police. Vargas is listed under stable condition.
