Reyes Health Care Meeting Heats Up In El Paso

El Pasoans with signs inside and outside of Bowie High School Saturday sent a clear message about health care in America: something has to be done.

"I believe we need health care reform," said Irma Cerdenas.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-El Paso), spent the afternoon in Southcentral El Paso at a town hall meeting, fielding question about the health care plan that the Obama administration is proposing. Reyes fielded several questions from some attending who asked if he would trade in his health care plan for the one the Obama administration is proposing. Others wanted to know how the country would pay for the plan.

"I'm against the reform, because for one thing our country is in debt, and how are we gonna pay for this?" Edweard Perez wondered.

Reyes said the plan is not final.

"I've read it multiple times," said Reyes. "What people have to realize is this thing is a work in progress."

Town hall meetings like the one here in El Paso have been heating up around the country, and it's been no different here. President Barack Obama is calling for a health care overhaul that will offer most Americans health care without raising the federal debt.

"I’ve been obviously watching this going on around the country. I wanted El Paso to represented with support for the president,” said Irma Cardenas.

Meanwhile Reyes said there are several elements that he wants to see included in the plan.

"The first is that it be deficit neutral, that means it will be fully paid for so it doesn't add to the deficit. And the second is that it be available to 97 percent of the people in this country," Reyes said.
