County Commissioners Seek Proposals To Privatize Ascarate Golf Course

El Paso County commissioners voted 4-0 Wednesday to seek proposals from private bidders to run Ascarate golf course.

Commissioner Veronica Escobar said the county is losing $125,000 a year operating the course. So the court is looking for more cost-effective ways to manage the 18-hole course.

Escobar said fewer El Pasoans are golfing this year and all city-owned courses are seeing lower numbers as well.

The city's three golf courses are operated and managed by private companies.

Escobar said any potential changes would not affect Ascarate park at all, just the golf course.

The commissioners are allocating $1.3 million next year to operate the course.

Some golfers told KFOX they are in support of the potential change. Others said that they are worried it would affect the current rates.

"I've always liked it here. It's the best deal in town, and you can't go wrong with the course for the money," said golfer Corey Bixler. "I'd be sad to see it privatized. I would think it would be more expensive."

The last time the commissioners court asked for bids, they did not receive any at all. So Escobar said the whole process could take several months, even if they do receive a bid this time.
