LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Something new and fresh has hit the Las Cruces Public Schools, well at least in the middle schools and high schools. It’s a new lunch menu, something that hasn’t been changed in 15 years. And already in just two days of a new school year, students at Las Cruces High School have noticed a difference.“One of my good students came through the line really excited and said, 'wow, Ms. parece, que ando en Golden Coral,' which means he thought he was eating at Golden Coral,” said LCHS cafeteria cashier Lorrie Segreto. And it isn't just a bigger selection and variety of foods that students are raving about, but taste as well.“All this stuff it kind of seems you can only get it at grocery stores but it's, I don't know, it's too satisfying to even describe,” said LCHS Junior Christopher De La Rosa.So what is it that's so different and new?“Something I guess more cultural and something you probably only see in fast food restaurants,” said De La Rosa. The Las Cruces Public School’s nutrition service department director, Nancy Cathey, said that is exactly what students are seeing.“The choices match more what they might see in town, so now we have Italian food, Oriental food, Mexican food every day,” said Cathey. For all you worried parents out there, you can relax because this food is healthy.“They meet the USDA requirements for calories for this age group, the fat's low enough and it has all the vitamins and minerals they're supposed to be getting,” said Cathey.
