Blockbuster Stores Vanish In Las Cruces

The movie rental industry is changing at a fast pace, and the shift may be causing local stores to go out of business.

The Blockbuster on North Main Street was the last Blockbuster left in Las Cruces. As of Monday, however, it became the third and last one to close its doors for good.

Assistant manager of the store Noel Gonzalez said they found out the store would be closing just before noon on Monday. According to Gonzalez, the general manager of the store already left town and there are about 12 employees that are now left without a job.

Since the Blockbuster is franchise not corporate, all the staff can do now is get ready for tomorrow, when they will try and sell everything possible in the store.

Gonzalez said the reason for the closing is because with more modern rental systems such as Redbox and Netflix, competition is just too tough.

“The consumer these days--everybody is busy, they have kids, they have work and they want everything faster,” said Gonzalez. The doors will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and all DVDs and video games will only cost $5. Even candy and soda will be on sale.

Gonzalez said shoppers looking for a deal should learn from the other Las Cruces Blockbuster closings, and he said customers should expect to see a line at the door hours before they open.
