Officials Try To Make Rio Grande Ecotourist Friendly

Some on the El Paso County Commissioners Court want want to bring more green to the Borderland.

The Rio Grande River has some of the greenest green you can find in the El Paso area. Right now, the floodways in and around the Rio Grande River are mowed on a regular basis by the International Boundary and Water Commission for mostly flood control reasons.

"Once we mow, any seedling that's coming up will be cut down," said Robert Rivera, with El Paso County Public Works.

However, if they stopped mowing, "there is really some beautiful wildlife and natural flora that is able to thrive as a result," said Commissioner Veronica Escobar.

Escobar, who is leading the charge to stop mowing the floodways, said it could bring all kinds of wildlife back to the Borderland.

"Where some of the cottonwoods can come back, where some of the beaver can come back, some of the other birds can come back and fish," Escobar told KFOX.

And it could spur something called ecotourism; people who visit places to check out the natural environment.

"We have great weather we have great outdoor assets, gorgeous natural assets, but we don't market ourselves that way," she said.

With the county and hopefully the city's support, Escobar said the IBWC will study what will happen to flood control if you stop mowing.

"It doesn't cost anything to do it, and it doesn't cost anything to preserve what we've got and keep it beautiful," she said.

On Tuesday, city leaders will discuss the very same resolution County Commissioners passed on Monday.
