Mattress Gallery Closes; Some Customers Satisfied

Back in April, Sam Romero plunked down $450 for a new mattress at Mattress Gallery, but it never came.

"You definitely feel like you've been given the once over,” Romero said. "I never got the delivery."

It wasn’t just Romero that had complaints. Gloria Rodarte said she was ripped off after she was never given her mattress, and Sarah Armendariz as well. That's not to mention the other calls into the KFOX newsroom.

Eventually Romero got a refund check from Mattress Gallery, but that check bounced. When Romero found out, he called the store.

"I didn't really get a call back, so I went to the county Web site so I could report the bounced check. And I followed their procedure - I sent Mattress Gallery a letter saying that they have 10 days to pay or else I take it to the County Attorney," Romero said.

After reporter Derek Shore found out Mattress Gallery was going out of business, Shore stopped by Mattress Gallery Sunday to get video for this story and ask if every customer had been given a refund or a mattress. Before Shore went in, the owner, Raul Davila came out.

"Go ahead and stop recording," Davila told KFOX photojournalist Mario Pena.

"Why?" Shore asked.

"Because you guys can't be filming," Davila answered.

"We wondered if those customers had been satisfied." Shore asked

"Is he still filming?" Davila asked.

"Yeah, he is." Shore answered.

"Did I ask you to stop filming so we can talk about it?” Davila asked.

"Well, I guess whatever you're telling me, I guess my concern is why it can’t be recorded," Shore responded.

After Pena refused to stop filming, Shore was asked to come in away from the camera. Inside, Davila called Shore a liar and a snake, but answered none of his questions.

In the meantime, Romero filed that claim with the County Attorney and he was repaid this week, albeit months later. Shore contacted Rodarte and she had received her mattress.

Romero, however, hasn’t changed his mind about the company.

"It's going to happen when you treat your customers like this. You're going to go out of business," Romero said.
