NMSU Housing Overwhelmed By Influx Of Freshmen

The Housing Department at New Mexico State University has definitely seen a spike in the number of students wanting to live on campus. Most of this is due to a very large increase in freshmen enrolled at the University. This may be a good thing for the university, but it may be a problem for a student being left without a place to live on campus, at least temporarily. Currently, NMSU has almost 2,900 students signed up to live on campus in dorms or apartments. This is an increase of almost 9 percent compared to last year. Julie Weber, who is the director of housing and residential life, said last year when the campus opened up they were over-subscribed by about 35 to 40 students and some had to be placed in temporary housing. This year, Weber said, more than 100 students will be moved to temporary housing. Weber said the overwhelming numbers are good because it means students not only want to be at NMSU, but they want to live on campus even if it is a temporary inconvenience for some.

“The worst part is having to move a second time because on Sunday it will be wall to wall people out here moving in and for some of our students it will mean a second move in a few weeks,” said Weber.

Even though there are about 150 people set up for temporary housing, this number could increase as more and more students continue to enroll late. Weber said if they fill up their temporary housing they do have a contingency plan.
