Are veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan with service-related disabilities getting the compensation they deserve?Tuesday in Washington, a Veteran’s Affairs committee charged with looking into the issue said no.They're making a list of recommendations for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. It includes more help for family caregivers, and taking quality of life, not just financial loss, into consideration for compensation.Veterans and their families we talked to also wanted greater recognition of traumatic brain injuries.Sara Wade, an Army wife, said, "If Ted were a parapalegic or had lost both of his legs, he'd be compensated more than for having a severe brain trauma."Ted Wade, U.S. Army Veteran, said "The list only pertains if you're missing body parts and the body parts don't include the brain. And that's one of the most necessary pieces of human body and so that should be on the list."An independent study commissioned by the VA last year estimated the cost of introducing additional payments for quality of life issues is somewhere between $10 and $30 billion a year.
