EL PASO, Texas -- The American Psychological Association adopted a resolution this week denouncing the use of therapy to convert gay people to become straight, a process called reparative therapy.Despite the resolution, El Paso doctor and pastor Becky Personett, said she will not stop counseling those who want to convert to heterosexuality.Personett claims just five years ago, she was gay."It's been five years now that I've been on my journey,” Personett said. "I don't feel denied, don't feel put off, I just know that I am the woman that God originally wanted me to be."Now Personett considers herself an ex-gay and counsels other local El Pasoans that are quote looking to “get out of homosexuality.”“Those people that have unwanted same-sex attractions, it becomes a problem. They don't want to live that lifestyle, and yet they have that tendency,” Personett said.Personett offers faith-based counseling to help convert people, but the recent resolution by the American Psychological Association has denounced what Personett and others like her do.The resolution said there is no scientific evidence that gay people can change, that it's not a mental disorder and reparative therapy could cause deep depression and suicidal thoughts.Cesar Campa is a local gay rights activist and community member, he said instead of therapy to challenge sexual orientation, those in need of help should seek therapy to gain self-acceptance."It's something that's intrinsic about who you are, you know it’s not a lifestyle, it’s not a choice," Campa said. "The concerns that you have going through reparative therapy is this suppression, denial of who you are and once again that leads to all the same factors you were trying to address in the first place."For Personett, the APA’s findings are not going to change anything for her."No, I won't change. I'm going to stay with a process that if there is hope and if there is help, why wouldn't we offer that? Why would we let these people go on in their misery?” Personett said.
