El Paso Tanning Salon Reacts To Cancer Report

It's a report that has gotten worldwide attention -- The International Agency for Research on Cancer warns tanning beds not "probably," but "definitely" are able to cause cancer.

"I wasn't surprised, because about every year around the same time, some 15-second or 30-second news blurb comes on about how terrible tanning is," said Margie Nelson, General Manager of Aruba Tan in West El Paso.

The report said using tanning beds could increase the risk of developing cancer by 75 percent, especially for people who start before the age of 30.

"I have eczema, and so the tanning bed actually helps a lot with the skin condition," said Milly Nelson, who was getting ready for a session at Aruba Tan.

Milly Nelson has used tanning beds since she was 23 years old, and she doesn't plan on stopping because of the report.

"I figure living in the Sun City, I am going to get sun in here, or out there, and I figure this is safer," Milly Nelson told KFOX.

All of the employees at Aruba Tan on the westside are certified and trained to use the equipment.

"To start off very gradually, very few minutes, and gradually go up a few minutes each time. That way you're getting a good base tan, but you're not burning at all. You're not overexposing your skin," said Margie Nelson.

If the report worries you, Aruba Tan has an alternative available using an air brush to give you a spray tan. The spray tan uses absolutely no UV rays.
