Socorro To Construct Bridge Over Arroyo

Socorro residents continue to see flooding in the area that prevents them from leaving their neighborhood. But the mayor of Socorro said a plan to build a bridge is becoming a realization.

Work is under way to ease the amount of water and sand that rushes from the Sparks and Horizon City areas into Socorro neighborhoods like Cielo Azul and Valley Ridge. Part of the work includes a bridge on Stockyard Drive.

"Over the nine years that I've lived here, they always say they're going to build a bridge there and they've never done it," said Nathan Torres.

Torres knows anytime it rains, the only two exits out of his neighborhood Cielo Azul are blocked by rushing water.

"Up until now, everytime we had some heavy rains, people had to wait on the other side of the arroyo until the arroyo is clear," said Mayor Trini Lopez.

Lopez knows all too well the problems these two subdivisions endure during the rainy season. He said part of the solution is to clear out this arroyo regularly and construct the bridge where this dip is to allow traffic to flow.

"They can go to school everyday. They can go to work day or night without any problems," said Lopez.

Problems that these residents are ready to get rid of.

"It would be easier for us to get out instead of trying to find a different way to get out, like through the desert or another street which most of them get flooded anyway," said Torres.

Lopez said the project is a maintenance job, it's not new construction and it's not necessary to get city council approval. The bridge project will cost the city $25,000.
