CHAPARRAL, N.M. -- Dona Ana County Animal Control Officers believe they've found a huge cockfighting operation in Chaparral.Since serving a search warrant Tuesday afternoon, officers said they aren't even sure yet how many roosters they've found. The estimate is about 1,000.Animal Control Director Curtis Childress said their search of the property has also revealed a lot of cockfighting paraphenalia."What appears to be a couple of fighting pits and keeps and blades and all your typical paraphenalia, medicines and things like that," said Curtis Childress.Childress said they'll try to save as many of the roosters as they can by finding rescue facilities for them.Cockfighting was legal in New Mexico until two years ago.
