EL PASO, Texas -- Traffic accidents happen along the Borderland daily. Some are only minor crashes. Others serious -- even fatal. To date for 2009, there have been 33 fatal crashes in El Paso. That's compared to 28 last year from January to July. Nationwide, last year about 37,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes.A new report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows some of those fatal accidents could be avoided if motorists avoided the most common deadly driving mistakes. KFOX asked El Pasoans what they think the problems are. "Not paying attention," said George Reimere. "Talking on the phone. That would be one. Sometimes chatting with other people that sometimes we don't notice but distracts us," said Gerardo Urquiza.According to the NHTSA report, one fatal mistake made by drivers is perhaps the most simple: swerving. Drivers who do not stay in their own lane. In 2007 almost 16,000 people died in the United States in these types of crashes.Drowsy driving is also on the list. More traffic fatalities occurred during the hours most people are accustomed to being asleep -- between 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. -- than any other time of the day.Drinking and driving continues to be a fatal mistake. MADD reported that every 40 minutes someone dies in the nation in a drunken driving crash. There is also overcorrecting. More than 4 percent of automobile fatalities a year occur because of this mistake. Finally, NHTSA lists speeding as a problem. Driving too fast is the second highest cause of death in crashes. "They need to pay attention when they are driving. If you are driving, drive don't do other things,"said Gere Douglas, a west El Paso resident.
