LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- In 2005, Sgt. Erik Schei returned to his Rio Rancho home after fighting in Iraq. However, while he was in Iraq, he was shot in the head by a sniper and was left confined to a wheelchair. Since then, the community wanted to reach out to the Schei family and help them to pay for renovations to the house that would benefit Erik. Some of the renovations include wheelchair capabilities for Erik and his wheelchair and a pool for rehabilitation. With the leftover money, about $2,200 to be exact, the family put it into a nonprofit savings fund for later use. After doing some more construction to their house, the Schei family went to pull out the leftover money. However, due to mismanagement, the agency that held the funds shut down, leaving the Schei family with nothing. A local New Mexico State University fraternity heard about the situation and decided to take matters in their own hands.“We've been working on this for about a week so far. Right now, we're just about at $2,000 just around the corner of $2,200,” said Kappa Sigma President David Williams. And they don’t plan to stop at the original $2,200.“We would love to get more than 2,000 because I know right now they're looking at more things to buy for him such as some rehab equipment for his house,” said Williams.Williams said they hope to have a check in hand and ready to deliver to the Schei family by early next week. At the rate of response from the community, Williams said they hope to have close to $3,000 for the family next week.
