Former County Commissioner and well known El Pasoan Miguel Solis has died according to the Colorado State Patrol.

A sergeant with the state patrol said at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Solis and his wife, Felipa, were driving through Monarch Pass on Highway 50 when a small RV traveling in the opposite direction drifted into the opposite lanes of traffic.

The driver of the RV tried to overcorrect, but after side swiping a couple of cars, slammed head on into the 2009 Nissan Altima Solis was driving.

Close friend of Felipa, Kelly Jameson, said she suffered a broken collarbone, a broken rib. She had surgery Sunday to repair her elbow, which was also broken, said Jameson.

Felipa will be released from the hospital Tuesday and will return to El Paso on Wednesday.

We spoke to County Commissioner Dan Haggerty, who knows the Solis family well; just minutes after news came down about the tragic death.

"Well, saddened and sickened and the thought of how short life can be. You think you're some important something or other sometimes and you find out just how fragile life is," said Haggerty. Haggerty also added the Solis’ are some of the nicest people he has ever met.

Services for Miguel are pending.
