Firefighters Pray For Rain On Independence Day

Unless thunderstorms pass through the borderland bringing rain, Horizon City volunteer firefighters anticipate a long night of nonstop calls on the Fourth of July.

"Organized chaos is what it is on the Fourth of July," said Capt. Rudy Portillo.

Portillo and other volunteer firefighters responded to their first call of the holiday, a small brush fire in an open lot, with a KFOX crew riding along in the back seat.

"When you have an area like this that's so dry, that's when we have problems," said Portillo. "And then when you have these large fires getting close to these homes, that's when we start worrying about it."

Portillo said a bottle rocket or some other type of firecracker likely sparked the fire. The firefighters broke in their brand-new brush fire truck to put it out. Portillo said they expect to use the truck several times during the holiday weekend.

"You have so many small brush fires being called out everywhere," said Portillo. "At first, it looks like we're all just running around looking for fires. But actually it's all dispatched. Everybody knows where they're going. And once they get there, everybody knows what they have to do."

Up to 30 volunteer firefighters were camping out at the Horizon City station Saturday night. Some roamed the streets looking to put out brush fires before they became a much larger threat.

"The amount of runs happening here in Horizon is going up tremendously because now you have an influx of people," said Portillo. "The city's growing, and it's just getting bigger and bigger."
