Rain Hits Borderland On Holiday Weekend

Posted: 8:40 pm MDT July 3, 2009Updated: 9:28 pm MDT July 3, 2009

Dark clouds and rain drops. It's not exactly the way some people wanted to start the Fourth of July weekend.

"Too much rain, can't do anything," said Mike Turroa.

Others agree.

"It kind of sucks the day before the Fourth of July., I hope it's not like that tomorrow," said Cory Pham.

Rain poured over the El Paso area earlier Friday, then cleared out just in time for bands at the Downtown Street Festival to get warmed up for Friday night's performance. That was at around 2:30 p.m., when organizers were optimistic about the rain holding out.

"I can guarantee you even it does pour, people will still be out here you know having a good time," said Adrain Perez, a manager at L & F Budweiser.

Now fast forward to Friday evening, just after 6 p.m. when the rain made a comeback, peppering the Santa Teresa, N.M. and El Paso areas. It gave some people a hard time trying to light firecrackers.

"If you keep popping firecrackers I think it's going to get a little harder," Turroa told KFOX as he stood in the rain.

Still some said the rain will not spoil their fun. KFOX still found people, some with babies and umbrella's hanging out at the Downtown Street Festival.

"It's fine. I like it," said Kenneth Roche.

Some said Friday was a better day to enjoy the festival, even if it was raining.

"We have plans for tomorrow, Fourth of July, so it's either today or tomorrow, so we're here," said Dan Levesque.

But despite the hassle of the rain, some said there is a bright side, El Paso will at least get a break from the heat.

"Hell yeah, you got that right,” said Turroa. “The rain is better than the heat.”

Rain is in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
