Controversy Over Socorro Parade For State Baseball Champs

The Socorro baseball champions are in demand. The champs are wanted at almost every event. They will present themselves at two this weekend including a parade at Socorro, which has been the topic of plenty of contraversy.

The mayor of Socorro, Trini Lopez wants to honor the state champs once again but this time with a parade that will end at Cougar Park on Saturday afternoon.

But on Thursday night, the Socorro city council voted 3-2 to cancel the parade for the team because the boys have been exhausted. That means council will not approve spending money to hold the parade.

But the Lopez and the interim city manager bypassed the vote and they said they will still have the parade and the team will show up for the festivities.

"What this does is this overrules council, which according to the city charter it's not supposed to. The city charter states and rules for the city of Socorro," said Socorro council member Sergio Cox.

Cox said he hopes the team knows they're not obligated to go to the parade just because the city is having it. But Lopez says the team already committed.

"If Mr. Cox wants to stop the parade, it's not going to happen. The people of Socorro and the parents asked for it, they want to honor," said Lopez.

Originally, the team canceled with the city of Socorro, but as of Friday morning the state champs said they are planning on going on Saturday for the celebration.

Cox said he wants to investigate and look into the legality of bypassing a city council vote.
