LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- New Mexico Congressman Harry Teague was on his Energy Independence Tour and stopped by New Mexico State University Friday. He is promoting his legislation under the Biofuel Engineering Training Act.“It will allow us to develop curriculum to let students know more about biofuels and other alternative energy sources and it will help promote research in this area that is badly needed,” said Martha Mitchell, professor of chemical engineering. And Teague couldn’t agree more with Mitchell about the need for biofuel research.“We can't continue to make the advances that we've made in biofuel research without setting up a degree curriculum and we need universities like New Mexico State University to help us do that,” said Teague. Both Teague and Mitchell stress the importance on not relying on oil anymore and producing our own biofuel diesel.NMSU researchers say they have already been successful at turning vegetable oil and algae into biofuel diesel, but with continued research they can look into doing it more cost efficiently.
