EL PASO, Texas -- This holiday weekend, police and fire officials want to remind the public of restrictions in place for fireworks and the importance of handling fireworks safely."I was a kid and I didn't think it could happen, until it happened to my cousin,” said Alberto Luevano of west El Paso.Luevano still remembers the Fourth of July that changed his cousin’s life. "He was playing with fireworks and one blew out on his hand and caught three of his fingers,” Luevano said. “Since then we are not really into fireworks."Every Fourth of July people get maimed, injured or sometimes even killed when fireworks aren't handled properly. More than 50 percent of injuries occur to children and teens. Even the innocent looking sparklers most kids enjoy can easily light a fire.Keep in mind within city limits in El Paso, Socorro, and Anthony, Texas, there's a zero tolerance for any type of fireworks. In Dona Ana county and Las Cruces, only ground, hand-held sparkling and smoke devices are allowed.Sheriff’s officials told KFOX you are allowed to put on your own light show off of Montana Avenue once you pass the intersection of Zaragoza Road and Montana, but keep in mind several intersections in the area will be blocked off to the public. In certain parts of San Elizario, Clint and Fabens, fireworks are allowed. Fireworks are also allowed in Horizon once you pass Eastlake Boulevard. If you are caught with fireworks in restricted areas, they will be confiscated and you can be fined up to $500.
