Business Owners Want Mesa Construction To Finish

Naser Yousif is the owner of Sinbad restaurant right on Mesa Street. While he works, he said the construction on Mesa is taking its toll on his business.

"The customers, they want to come in, they want to have easy access to the parking lot," Yousif said. "Whenever you have something like this going on, people tend to go somewhere else. It does affect the business."

The city of El Paso has been repaving the Kern Place area for the last couple of weeks. The repaving is currently happening on Mesa Street from UTEP until downtown and currently on Stanton, Kansas and Crosby Avenue. The construction work is happening mostly at night to avoid the heat.

But business owners, like Yousif, are wondering if the orange signs will be gone soon.

"Is it inconvenient? Absolutely. Anytime you do construction or reconstruction, you're inconveniencing the public and the people that live there," said Daryl Cole, El Paso’s streets director.

Cole cited the construction slowing because of Mother Nature.

"Of course this rain sets us back a little bit,” Cole said.

Some streets haven't been worked on because the rain and threat of rain is keeping workers at bay, Cole said.

"Rain permitting, if we can get a break in the rain, we should be done in three to four weeks," Cole said.

That’s three or four weeks Yousif will be dealing with the dust.

"I wish they could do it today, before tomorrow," Yousif said.
