EL PASO, Texas -- Lawmakers approved a bill that will allow the Texas Department of Transportation $2 billion in bonds to be spend on road projects was passed. El Paso could benefit more than other Texas cities. Most drivers in El Paso complain about the traffic all over town."We're growing. I think we can definitely use some more roads," said Monica Delgado from East El Paso.On Thursday, the House and the Senate approved a bill that would allow the state to borrow $2 billion for road projects."TxDOT is really under funded and we have right now on the books, in contract, ink, $1 billion transportation plan for El Paso to finish our loop," said Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso.Currently, the loop abruptly ends downtown. The plan is to connect the Cesar Chavez Border Highway to I-10 near Canutillo, Texas. Shapleigh said $1 billion would pay for the debt service on the loop project. Some residents said it's a project that's long overdue."The problem is we need to open up more infrastructure for semis and trucks that are bringing merchandise to stores, but there needs to be a way to relieve pressure," said Jorge Velasquez from East El Paso.Shapleigh agrees. He said he hopes to see a bypass constructed as well to get semi-trucks off I-10."It's a good infrastructure for the city for transportation and to relieve pressure from I-10," said Velasquez. The bill will now go to the governor's desk for his signature. It will go in effect immediately.
