Business Increases For Las Cruces Towing Companies With New Ordinance

A few months ago, a new city ordinance was approved that would allow police to tow any vehicle when a driver is pulled over for not having a valid driver’s license or insurance. Since the ordinance was approved, a 60-day grace period has passed and the ordinance has been in effect.

KFOX wanted to see if the city has already seen an increase in towing. In an attempt to reach out to tow companies, many of them told KFOX that since the ordinance has taken effect they have yet to be on police rotation. KFOX did find one company's employee, who didn’t want to speak on camera, but said they been on rotation since the ordinance and they have seeing an increase.

The Las Cruces Police Department said it is too hard to tell what kind of increase has occurred. “Obviously it's an increase because we hadn't done it before but we don't know if it's a small number right now or if it's a bigger number right now, we just don't know yet,” said Public Information Officer Dan Trujillo.

For now, even though the police said they are unsure of what kind of increase has occurred, since June 1, Police said they have towed 19 vehicles for not having insurance and 24 for not having a valid driver’s license. Police said some of these could have been the same vehicle involved in the same incident.

For now, police have one simple message. “Obviously if you're going to be driving, make sure to get insurance. By state law, you're required to have liability insurance minimum,” said Trujillo.
