A gang warrant roundup ends in 44 arrests.

The El Paso Police Department’s Gang Investigations Unit coordinated the roundup targeting Barrio Azteca gang members and their associates Monday.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI arrested 44 wanted Azteca gang members and associates on outstanding warrants.

The warrants were for anything from criminal non-support (failure to pay court ordered child support) to aggravated assault.

Spokesman Chris Mears said with gang members involved, many of the warrants were for drug offenses.

He also said that the authorities are aware of the current turmoil within the gang following the successful Federal RICO prosecution of many of the gang’s leaders.

This roundup was part of the El Paso Police Department’s continued efforts to ensure the Barrio Azteca gang is not able to reestablish its criminal enterprise within the El Paso community.
