Ascarate Park Playgrounds, Baseball Fields To See Improvements

El Paso County leaders are putting their money where their mouths are one week after committing to rebuilding and renovating Ascarate Park.

Michelle Velez moved to El Paso from Dallas just three weeks ago.

"There's a huge difference. They're is a lot more money over there, you can tell the difference more, the playgrounds are newer, it's all cleaned up, you can tell that they maintain the parks," said Velez.

And her first impression of Ascarate Park was not a good one.

"You don't want them to touch a lot of things and it's just being more cautious with your kids," Velez told KFOX.

So she was thrilled when KFOX told her El Paso County Commissioners approved spending $135,000 to improve the playgrounds at Ascarate.

The commissioners want to replace this playground equipment for a couple of reasons including safety concerns.

"From my perspective, we've been as aggressive as we can be, it's very exciting, it's a very important park to me and the community," said Comm. Veronica Escobar.

But others believe that much money is a lot for playground equipment, and the plan was rushed through.

"Wait a minute. Let's sit down and think of all the things we could do with that money that makes reasonable sense," Comm. Dan Haggerty told KFOX.

But Velez is glad to see that El Paso will follow Dallas' lead on park quality.

"They need somewhere that's going to be safe, clean, you know you can trust where they are not going to get hurt," she said.

The money will go toward not just new equipment, but also canopies to provide shade.

Commissioners also approved reconstructing the four public baseball fields with completely new backstops, fencing, dugouts and fields.
