Anthony, NM, Sees Flooding Once Again

Posted: 5:24 pm MDT June 29, 2009Updated: 6:21 pm MDT June 29, 2009

As monsoon season hits, the same part of Anthony, N.M., must deal with flooding yet again.

Diana Sosa heard the rain, saw the lighting and felt the thunder rattle her Franklin Vista Apartment Complex early Monday morning.

"I just knew that as soon as the water hits certain parts here, I just move my car, because I know it's going to get filled," Sosa said as she looked over the large pond that used to be the apartment complex parking lot.

Sosa had been through the routine, her neighbor had not.

"We tried knocking on my neighbors door, but apparently she was very, very tired and she didn't hear us," she said.

That neighbor woke up Monday to her car halfway submerged.

"She couldn't believe it, but she knew that it was raining, but she didn't think it was going to rain this hard this time," Sosa told KFOX.

The Anthony Water and Sanitation District confirmed to us the problems at the apartment complex and drainage issues with the streets nearby have gone on for years, and since it is in unincorporated Dona Ana County, they said it's the county's problem.

"I know that they've been very concerned that they are going to try to do something about this," said Sosa.

KFOX contacted Dona Ana County about the drainage issues, including making a number of phone calls to the man in charge of drainage. Those calls have not been returned.
