First Gay Fraternity Starts At UTEP
Delta Lambda Phi is the newest fraternity at University of Texas at El Paso.Defined as an organization of male students primarily for social purposes, the group of students is just that, but there is something a bit unique about their membership.Delta Lambda Phi is the first gay fraternity at UTEP."We are a fraternity; we are a ‘hoo-rah’ fraternity too,” said fraternity president Carlos Gonzalez. “We try to be men of integrity and honor and so with that, there are different components. There's a service component. There's a fundraising component.”The fraternity is currently in colony status, meaning they are working with the national fraternity to garner full status."We have 13 Alpha class members in the process of bringing a full chapter, a full charter here at UTEP," Gonzalez said.UTEP’s Greek community has been very accepting, Gonzalez said."You know, I had some apprehension. I was kind of scared; you know, how are they going to take it?" Gonzalez said. "But it's been amazing; the sororities and fraternities have embraced us."Delta Lambda Phi participated for the first time this year in Greek Week at UTEP.While accepted, some may ask what's the need for a gay, bisexual and progressive fraternity?"This is a traditional fraternity; we just happen to fall into a certain niche, and that is what just brings us even closer together," Gonzalez said.It is a brotherhood through a common denominator, they said they're here to stay."We have some way to go, but we have already accomplished a lot," Gonzalez said. There are nearly 30 chapters of Delta Lambda Phi across the country.
