A Dona Ana County Detention Center inmate escaped Friday morning while in custody of guards.

Bo Nevarez, spokesman for the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department, said 50-year-old Roque Garcia escaped under the watch of guards while being a patient at Las Cruces Nursing.

Garcia managed to climb out of a window and flee toward a neighborhood.

Garcia had been placed in the nursing home a week ago to undergo treatment for cancer. Nevarez told KFOX the Detention Center did not have the proper facilities to care for him.

He was arrested by officers from the Las Cruces Police Department around 10 a.m. and is currently under guard at Memorial Medical Center.
