"Transformers 2" Has Extra Appeal to Local Movie Fans

Hollywood's biggest movie release season comes during the summer months and fans are expected to go see "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen" in droves this weekend. But for local movie fans in El Paso, TX and Las Cruces, N.M., a climatic fight scene with white sand as the backdrop will have an aura of familiarity.

That's because White Sands National Park near Alamogordo, N.M. was used by the film's set director as the perfect make-believe battle scene. "It's not mostly all digital, I mean of course the robots are obviously the [computer graphics are]," said Dallas Yanez visiting relatives in El Paso from Chicago. "But in fact the environment, the scenery, it all can be related because we recognized it and that's what makes it so cool because it’s like right there, 'hey I remember that place'" said Yanez about the White Sands movie locale.

Several El Paso movie fans are asking themselves, "why wait" until the weekend to go see "Transformers 2", when they can avoid the crowds, go early and see one of summer's expected blockbusters without crowds around. Yanez is in town to visit family from Chicago. He brought his nephew to the movies and said the crowds are better here than back home, where show times for "Transformers" have been sold out for this week. "Considering the fact that 'Transformer' will be a big hit, probably any movie coming out in Chicago can be expected to have long lines," said Yanez.

That's why, way ahead of the usual Fourth of July box office release next week, "Transformers 2" opened at theatres on Wednesday. At some movie locations like the Cinemark in West El Paso, movie times started at 9:30 a.m. "I figured, since El Paso is a big place, let's see how long the lines are in terms of the movie theatre and sure enough, there aren't any long line," said Yanez. That was true for the 10:30 a.m. showing, but for later in the afternoon, several movies had people sitting outside the theater.

For those individuals who just arrived from outer space, the movie is all about robot machines that sometimes take the form of vehicles or fighter jets. In the film there's a fight between good and evil not only for the safety of humanity like in the first movie, but this time for the whole universe. And because most of the climatic battle scene takes place at White Sands, even more El Pasoans than just the serious movie fans will wait in line, weekday or weekends, to get popcorn, a drink and great summer action film.

The second "Transformers" movie is barely out and already Paramount and Dreamworks have officially announced that "Transformers 3" will be released in July of 2011. There is no word yet if movie co-stars Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox will reprise their role in next installment of the Transformers franchise.
