Rain Makes Cloudcroft Flood Cleanup Difficult

Rain continues to fall in Cloudcroft and residents are hoping for clearer skies after Tuesday’s flooding.

Drains along the highway near the Cloudcroft High School are just not large enough to hold the amount of water that gushed into them leading to major flooding at the Buckhorn Cabins.

The forecast shows more rain on the way for Cloudcroft, and there is a chance that the owner of these cabins will not get as much rest in the coming weeks. The owner declined an interview, but she said it was because she was so emotional over what had happened.

One person renting a cabin renter said he had to move all of his belongings out and into another. He said the owner spent a great deal of the day pulling out carpeting from the eight cabins, and vacuuming up the water and the mud.

“It was a mess. It was about 12 inches of water sitting in here. These cabins were totally flooded. I guess the drain was plugged or something,” said Johnathan Uhrich from Albuquerque.

Across the street from the cabins is the Cloudcroft High School where water seeped into the building Tuesday. Village leaders said there may be tiles that pull up, but crews were quick to get sandbags in place before more damage was done.
