Gangs/Drugs Could Be Possible Motives Behind Bar Shooting

Sheriff's investigators are looking into what could be a gang-related shooting that leaves two brothers dead outside a bar in Socorro.

The crime scene was cleared at the A and M bar on Alameda by 10 a.m. on Monday.

Jose Calderon lives two doors down from the A and M bar in Socorro.

"I saw a commotion outside. Security was telling everyone to get down. I heard a shot. I walked over and I saw a body lying there," said Calderon.

The El Paso Sheriff's spokesman, Jesse Tovar said Jesus Vargas, 46, and his brother Jose Vargas, 37, were killed outside the A and M bar at around 2 a.m. on Monday.

Investigators said it started as an argument inside the bar, then moved outside where the confrontation turned physical.

Tovar said it appears the brothers were targets.

"I only heard one shot and only saw one body and after that I decided I needed to go home and check on my family," said Calderon.

Jose Vargas was shot in the back of the head and Jesus Vargas died on his way to a hospital. Tovar said about 40 people were at the bar when the shooting happened and he said investigators are still talking to a lot of people searching for answers to their questions.

"I felt sorry for the family. My condolences go out to them especially on a Father's Day. I can't believe something like that had to happen. It's just sad," said Calderon.

The Sheriff's Office couldn't confirm if the shooting was drug related or gang related.
