Lower Valley Residents Say They Don't Want Bridge

The issue about a proposed port of entry had tempers flaring at a public meeting held by the city of El Paso on Wednesday.

Lower Valley residents went prepared with posters and their voices. They chanted, "We don't want it" inside the Riverside High School gymnasium where the meeting was held.

And like the previous port of entry public meeting, Ysleta Independent School District trustees spoke against it.

"Why add another bridge when you can't keep up with the man power needed to run the current bridges," said Liza Montelongo a member of the YISD board of trustees.

The public meeting was supposed to be an informative session that would include people's written comments and a response from city officials, but the public wouldn't have it. They demanded their voices be heard and at times city officials were interrupted.

"We heard you. You said the process from the beginning continue on, please," yelled a man from the bleachers.

Julie Baldwin-Munoz with the city's developmental services said there's a lot of misconceptions that the public has and wanted to clear up issues about traffic going onto Yarbrough.

"But the intent in terms of the potential or proposed commuter port of entry is to direct traffic onto loop 375 so there isn't an intent to direct traffic onto any of the arterials within the overall project limits," said Baldwin-Munoz.

A longtime Lower Valley resident, Jorge Acosta, responded, "They can put the roads to go straight through Yarbrough or they can put the roads going through the Border Highway, either way you're going to see people impacted."

City officials said the proposed port of entry which would not include commercial traffic is still in its initial stages.

"They can say they're doing a feasibility study and that's fine, but if no one speaks up they're going to assume it's all rightall right without he community and they're going ahead with it," said Acosta.

In November, city council will be presented a recommendation which will include two potential sites and a no build option for consideration. That will require a vote from city council.
