Low Gas Prices Come To Halt

Gas prices keep climbing every week and it’s only expected to rise over the summer. Some Borderland residents whom KFOX spoke with say the increase hasn’t gone unnoticed.

"They've been going up for the last two weeks probably about 40 cents," said Daniel Mendoza, of west El Paso.

The rising gas prices keep some El Pasoans like Chris Merritt on their toes, literally, putting wear and tear not only in his wallet -- but on his shoes. "On a good day I could ride the bus six or seven times,” Merritt said as he showed us the rundown on the bottom of his shoes. He told KFOX work requires him to drive throughout the Sun City, but by riding the bus and walking whenever possible in turn he's saving a whopping $400 a month, said Merritt.

According to a recent National Lundberg survey on fuel prices, a gallon of regular gasoline rose an average of 17 cents a gallon just over the past two weeks.

"It's going to put a big hole in my pocket,” said Aaron Cohen, of west El Paso. "Less movie time at Cinemark, no Western Playland."

"To get to work now I’m probably spending an extra $20 to $30 a week,” Mendoza added. That's $20 to $30 I could be using to take out my children."

Despite the increase in gas prices, on a good note right now El Paso is paying about $1.30 less than this time last year, when gas was flirting with the $4 mark.

The city in Texas paying the least for gas is Houston, at $2.47, according to AAA Texas. On the other hand San Francisco drivers are dishing out the most cash, at $2.99 a gallon, according to Lundberg.
