An El Paso resident is concerned that her relative who lives in a Las Cruces nursing home is subjected to head lice.

After overhearing a conversation between nurses and getting no answers she asked KFOX to look into the matter.

KFOX received confirmation that they are looking into lice cases there.

A representative from Fundamental Administrative Services, a consulting company for Las Cruces Bursing Center said they did find a few cases of lice with some residents, and have been treating them.

If you are unfamiliar, lice are tiny insects that live on humans and feed on blood. They are usually found in hair and cause itching. Unfortunately they can spread easily from person to person in close contact. The consulting company said the nursing center noticed signs of lice early last week and have since sprayed the building with a lice treatment.

“There were two rooms that the residents did show signs of lice. They received treatment in abundance of caution and they have checked all the residents all the staff,” said Darlene Lucero with Fundamental Administrative Services.

Lucero said the New Mexico State Health Department is aware of the cases and representatives were in the building last week when the lice were discovered.

She said by no means would she call the cases an outbreak, but understands why residents would want to remain cautious.
