DTV Switch Arrives-- Are Borderland Residents Prepared?

The day that some have been dreading is finally here: June 12, the day of the switch from analog to digital. Some Borderland residents KFOX caught up with overnight said they're still not ready for the switch.

"I’ve heard about it; I know the day is coming but I’m not prepared,” said Sandra Donaldson of west El Paso.

Some El Pasoans like Edgar Rivas thought the government wouldn't pull through."People were hesitating because they already made a change once that they were going to delay it and I think people were expecting another delay,” said Rivas.

Though some remain unprepared, close to 90 percent of households are digital ready, according to a survey by the National Association of Broadcasters. "I got ready a long time ago, I bought a new TV,” said Roberto Rodriguez of Sunland Park, N.M.

But why are some still waiting until they lose their picture? "I just haven't put forth the effort to do it. As far as the TV, I'm not really home that much,” Donaldson said.

The Federal Communications Commission told KFOX a large amount of people who are still not ready are the elderly and non-English speaking households, they encourage them to call 1-888-CALL-FCC for help. You can also call KFOX at 833-8585 or 845-5369.

For those who still need a converter box coupon it's not too late, but there is a limited amount of money available. Coupons are only available until July 31. It takes about nine business days to process and mail coupons, but if the program experiences a high demand, some applicants may have to be placed on a waiting list.
