Local HIV Patients Left Without Medication

More than 600 El Pasoans living with HIV and AIDS were told they would not be receiving life-saving medication after Planned Parenthood of Central El Paso has discontinued their HIV/AIDS program.

"I chose Planned Parenthood because I was familiar with it. Every month I go to them for my meds, to get my meds; it's a monthly refill and every month I go to them. Not once did they give any type of notice," said one HIV patient.

After reporter Derek Shore tried calling numerous times, Planned Parenthood released the following statement, in part:

“PPCEP is reassessing its management of its HIV/AIDS programs and transitioning them to other local providers. In doing so, Planned Parenthood officials have been in communication with state officials and community health leaders to work collaboratively on ensuring that patients in El Paso continue to have health care options,” the statement read.

But it seems that option no longer includes Planned Parenthood.

At the same time, KFOX has learned that a northeast Planned Parenthood location will close for good on Saturday.

"What am I going to do? How am I going to get my meds? I’m upset, angry," the HIV patient said.

The tears rolling down the patient’s face wondering how the nearly thousand-dollar prescriptions are to be paid for.

"I’ll just try, you know, to stay healthy; that's pretty much it," the patient said.

Most patients no longer being served by Planned Parenthood are being referred to El Centro de Salud La Fe.
