El Paso Studies High-Tech Rapid Transit Buses Around City

Hop on the bus - that's the idea behind the city of El Paso’s mass transportation push. The city is trying to get a Bus Rapid Transit system rolling through the Borderland.

It wall call for putting bus terminals in the far corners of the city such as Mesa near Doniphan, Montana Avenue in the east El Paso area as well as Dyer and Alameda streets. Those terminals will be designed to help people get to downtown El Paso, a central location in town.

"It looks like something out of the future," said David Avila who lives in Northeast El Paso.

Avila attended a meeting Tuesday evening that was hosted by the city to explain the plan to residents. The plan is undergoing a study to figure out how to implement it.

"If they could do something like this, it would really improve the community,” said Avila. “I think it would be less people on the road."

And that's one of the ideas behind the project. City representative said it could also help people get to places quicker. There are many ideas on the table to implement the plan like having lanes just for the rapid buses and traffic lights that may allow more time at green lights to keep traffic flowing.

But there are some concerns. For example, the city may have to do some widening of streets, which may call for the city to have to take over some property. The most vulnerable streets are Alameda and Montana.

“The alternatives that we are looking at right now, look at minimalizing the acquisitions that would be required," said Julie Balwin-Munoz, a spokesperson for the city.

Baldwin-Munoz said the study cost about $1 million and should be complete by October or November. She said once the study is complete the city can plan for a groundbreaking date.

The project will cost $250 million. Baldwin-Munoz said the city plans on asking the federal government for funds. The city did not say if residents would have to share in any of the expenses.
