Many Angry Over New Guantanamo Video Game

After years of international controversy for holding detainees without proper legal due process, the prison at Guantanamo Bay is becoming interactive.

A new video game, designed in-part by a former Guantanamo detainee, takes place in 2011 and has the player kill what would be understood to be American and British troops as the player attempts to escape.

Pete Hegseth, chairman of Vets for Freedom, has spearheaded a revolt against the game entitled Rendition: Guantanamo.

"In actuality it’s depicting the U.S. as sort of oppressive guards, and these terrorists, for lack of a better term, as freedom fighters and the victims," Hegseth said. "It tries to create this perception that Americans are the oppressors, this is a prison where torture goes on on a daily basis, and as a guard who served in Guantanamo Bay, I know what a professional operation we have there."

Reporter Derek Shore showed Borderland residents the game trailer and asked what they think of the idea of a game depicting the killing of American troops.

“I think its pretty offensive. The violence itself is pretty offensive and then the setting makes it even more offensive," said Doug Payne, of West El Paso.

"It's bad enough that we're in a war, and losing our troops over there. No, I don't think it’s a good idea," said Manny Cabrera, of West El Paso.

The majority Shore spoke to thought the game didn't have a place in the U.S. But some may just call it freedom of expression.

The company that makes the game, claims that U.S. soldiers are not being killed in the game, rather they are guards employed by a private security firm.

It is unclear if Xbox or any other company will sign on to distribute the game in U.S. The game reportedly already has distributors in other countries.

Now tell us what you think. Leave us your comments below and tell us if you think the game should be distributed in the U.S. or anywhere else.
