EL PASO, Texas -- The Dallas Street area got pummeled during the 2006 floods. Now it will get some relief from the city.Arturo Torres with Mechanical Technologies remembers the 2006 floods like it was yesterday."When the people would come down the bridge and they would hit the foot, foot and a half of water, that's where the danger was," Torres told KFOX.His business is located just south of the Dallas Street ponds under I-10; Ponds that are now getting some help they desperately need."We're putting a pump station right at the interstate and then a force main from there to the river," said El Paso city engineer Alan Shubert.Shubert said the project, with a price tag of more than $600,000, has been a priority for a long time."The community out there is really excited about it, anybody that is in that Cotton/Missouri/Dallas area, they really need some relief," he said. While Torres' business will hopefully soon be flood free, he worries about others in this area."If you go from Montana north, those residents I'm sure can tell you stories when it rains, even a small rain like the one we had last Friday," he said. The city engineering department hopes to have the first phase of the project done by the end of the year. The second phase would more than triple the amount of water the system can pump. That work will be done by El Paso Water Utilities.
